Maplewood will be strictly enforcing the township's anti-idling ordinance later this month, according to a
public notice posted on the Township Web site.
The notice says the ordinance, which can include
a fine of between $250 and $1,000 for each offense, outlaws idling by non-moving vehicles for three minutes or longer.
If you are among those who like to let the car warm up in the driveway on a cold day, beware that a ticket
may follow.
"I am trying to expand education and enforcement," Township Committee
member Fred Profeta, who is leading the enforcement, said. "We will be talking to the police chief this week about strategies.
Although there are 50 signs all over town, the public's knowledge of this state law is probably not too extensive. And idling
does make a difference."
Profeta, head of the township's environmental committee and
a former mayor, said the law allows exceptions for those stuck in traffic and waiting to get on the highway, among other exceptions.
But he finds it an important issue.
